Tentative Construction Schedule

12-08-06

Construction continues at a fair pace. We are still aimed at January for a completion date, but it is touch and go. The roof is still not finished, but it is far enough along that the inside work is going on. The next important thing to have happen, is to get the electricity on. That is up to LG&E now to schedule installing the transformer. Some of the finished work will need the heat on before it can proceed. We are on the same feeder line as the courthouse annex. So they will be without power for a day when the cutover occurs. They are going to do it on a Saturday. This will also mean that Ridgway temporary location will be without circulation or internet that day, since the radio on the courthouse annex's roof will not be powered. The public space is really impressive! There are so many details and decisions that need made that we are now going to meet once a week with the contractors and architect to help keep things moving.

11-10-06

A long awaited update. The library inside is finally, in the last two days, starting to really get some character. Today there were 17 people inside hanging drywall. It suddenly is starting to feel like a building and not a barn. The finished roof is only 1/2 on, but they have a rubber membrane roof covering the library all they way across, so they feel safe enough to start finishing the inside. We are still aimed at the end of January to be there. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we move the last week of January but don't reopen until the first week of February. I would not want to bet on an opening date yet. There are still too many unknowns.  I suppose we could hold a drawing, just like we did for the Ky. Derby and see who picks the right opening date. Just a reminder, for now they are asking us not to come to construction site and enter the library. It is still not safe in there. We will try to figure out a way to let everyone see the library before we open again. Like everything else that is up in the air too.

Progress really is being made. Sometimes it seems like everything takes a long time! Most of the brick is on the east and west side of the building. They are finally starting to put on the metal roof decking. Once the building is enclosed they can start working on the inside finishes.  The cement beam they poured to support the new roof line on the existing part of the building had to be removed on the side closest to the Courthouse Annex. They poured it at the incorrect height.  Removing it required using a jack hammer. It took them a little over a week to take it off again. Now they need to put it back again, this time at the right height.  The latest minor snag involved the metal arches supporting the stone and brick above the big windows. They fabricated them incorrectly. They were 6" too short so they had to remake them to fit properly. The new and the old parts of the buildings are more together so it is easier to see what the exterior of the building will look like when it is finished. They have yet to start the exterior of the main entrance and ramp areas. They won't start that  until they get the roof decking up, as they are using the front area as a place to lift the roofing from.

All the decisions about the furniture and shelving are just about finished . They only details we have yet to settle on are some of the extra touches in the children's area.

7-20-06

We have had some more minor delays and some change orders that have pushed up the cost a little but nothing we can't handle.

The exterior block walls were only 6" thick not the standard 8" block. To make sure the building would not collapse with the new roof load under strong wind conditions, the entire inside of the building had to be lined with metal studs. Also, some asbestos was found in the bottom layer of the roof. This had to be removed.

The concrete slab is now finished and the roof trusses should start going up next week.

6-20-06

Things are moving along at a good pace now. All the steel is up outside. They have just started putting up metal stud walls inside. Once they are all up we will be able to get a good feel for how the spaces will lay out.

New problems relating to construction continue to pop up. They are mostly related to things not known about the old building and having to make changes to the plan. These type of changes tend to push up the cost of the building. The latest problem is the blocks in the old building were only 6" thick block. They should have been 8". This has implications for structural strength and dimensions.

I have added new pictures on the public construction page so you can see what is going on.

5-16-06

The foundation walls are up except for a gap they left so they can move construction equipment in and out for a while. They are putting the new sewer pipe in the ground. The center piers are poured and soon as the plumbing excavation is finished,  they will start backfilling up the the height of the foundation wall.

We met with the movers yesterday to go over procedures of the move. They will drop off crates and book trucks this Friday.

We meet this Thursday with a company that specializes in fancy display items. We are working with them on the children's area.

I have just received the tentative lease agreement from the Louisville Water Company. We are touch and go if we are going to get our data network extended to the new location in time. We may have to send all our check ins and check outs to LJ  (That's a joke I hope) for a while if Ridgway Temporary location is without connection to the outside world.

I think is it finally going to stop raining!!

5-1-06

The concrete walls and footer work is approximately 2 weeks behind.

Our Alpha location is on schedule for us to move in.

The water company has agreed to host our temporary data radio site at their water tower. We still need them to generate a contract for us. Then we need Salt River to get us a pole and electricity. Then we need to install circuit box and radio equipment. Then we need to change things at Shepherdsville end to power the radios and point them correctly  when we vacate our library and add two more radios to link from shep. to water tower to alpha bldg. This one is going to be the hardest timeline to meet.

View from water tower hill. Look for blue roof of courthouse and alpha bldg down below.

As per popular request ......  Technical Services in their new home moving in and settled in!

We have signed the lease on our temporary location and have hired a moving company.

The library will be closed on Monday May 22. The packing and materials will be delivered on Friday May 19th. The movers will arrive on Tuesday May 23. It will take 3+ days to move everything to the temporary location.  We are asking those normally scheduled to work at Ridgway and do not have other duties at that time to help out with the move. That will primarily involve doing things like packing and labeling boxes and taking books off the shelves and placing on trucks. We will also be helping put the books back on the shelves and loading the boxes at the new location. We are aiming at being able to re-open by Thursday June 1. This date is our best guess. If we get ready sooner we will open. If a takes an extra day to two we will delay the opening.

They are still working on getting the space ready for us and there are still other things that have to happen before we will be ready to move in.

We will release the information to the newspapers, create signs and update the webpage to reflect the upcoming news next week.

4-14-06

The sewer line has only been broken 3 or 4 times! We had trouble matching the existing bricks. There have already been 3 change orders (compared to just one for the entire  Mt Washington Project). But so far we are doing just fine!!!!!!

Over the next two weeks we should see walls coming out of the ground.

3/29/06 A look at our possible temporary library.

3/29/06 Tech Services the shelves are coming down getting ready to move to DSL.

3/17/06 We had a meeting with all the subcontractors, EH and the architect. I have entered a tentative construction schedule and linked it above.

3/17/06 We are aiming at moving Tech services to DSL in about a month from now.

3/16/06  The offending piece of the sewer line was removed today. So we were without bathrooms from early morning until middle afternoon.  The old terra cotta sewer is gone. The new pipe is now about 6 feet lower in the ground. Our water is back on. We will be meeting with the contractor, subcontractors, and architect Friday.

3/15/06  Do not flush the library  toilet on the Ides of March!  The sewer line from the building to the street had problems today. It may have been damaged by the heavy equipment running around out there lately. By the time we were done, we had a backhoe a heavy duty snake. A camera that goes inside the pipe and ground penetrating radar., 4 or 5 city workers the subcontractors who did the grading, Bill and myself. By 3:00 the line was temporarily patched and they will all be back tomorrow bright and early to do something more permanent. That line is going away once the new building is built, but we need it until we vacate. Also, we found that the pvc pipe was connected to the old terra cotta pipe where the old sidewalk used to be. That is not a good thing and we need to get rid of that before they tie in the new sewer. That pipe is mostly on the city but a little of it is on the library's property.  Fun!

This page is to keep you up to date on what is happening with the construction.

3/7/06 The property is now fenced for construction and all the landscaping vegetation has been removed.

3/2/06 By this weekend we should see signs of construction. The end of parking lot will be closed off for use as a staging area for the construction workers. They will put fencing around the property, and start removing the landscaping and will bring in shale. Then they will start the footers.

You are all invited to the groundbreaking!!!!

  • We should be signing the contract by the end of this week  (March 3rd)

  • The board has approved signing the construction contract at their Feb. 21st board meeting.

  • The lowest bid was EH Construction LLC out of Brooks.

  • Construction should start in about 2 -3 weeks. It should take about 300 days to finish.

  • We will be able to stay in the building until sometime in June.

  • If everything goes perfectly, we can expect to move back in January 2007

  • We are looking at different options for finding a temporary location to move to. We will find a place in Shepherdsville somewhere.

  • Next week we are going to remove the benches in the grass area, and Pat’s bench. We will store those until we move back.
