| Every summer, I like to revisit old favorites. Below are just a few memorable reads from summers past. |

FRIED GREEN TOMATOES AT THE WHISTLE STOP CAFE
by Fannie Flagg I love reading down-home Southern fiction in the summer, especially books that manage to combine humor, drama, history, and crazy Southern eccentrics. Fannie Flagg's contemporary classic about a 1980s woman struggling with the apathy of middle age and two high-spirited women of the 1930s is definitely one of the best of its genre. |

WHITE TEETH by Zadie Smith The first time I read this novel it was 2001. I was visiting NYC and rather fascinated by the diversity and hectic pace. Set in another Big City, White Teeth is a hilarious novel (in a smart, somewhat absurd kind of way) that manages to be both very "large" and intimate at the same time. It focuses on two families—the Joneses and the Iqbals—as they make their way in modern England amidst the undercurrents of the racial, political, and social upheaval that characterized the last half-century. |

CRAZY FOR YOU by Jennifer
Crusie Romantic comedies are ideal relaxing summer reads, and Jennifer Crusie has become my go-to author when I am looking for the perfect humor/romance combo. Crazy for You, with its cast of busybodies and eccentric characters is probably my favorite. It features a small town teacher on a mayhem-filled search for happiness, determined for the first time in her life that she isn't going to "settle." |

THE GARGOYLE
by Andrew Davidson When I first read this novel about a severely burned man and the (possibly insane) woman who turns up claiming that they have loved each other for centuries, I raved about it in my Recommended Reading List. Two years later, I am still stunned by the language and powerful opening. |
