Third Place—Middle School

Survivor

My heart is slow,    my soul is weak.

My eyelids drop,     I strain to peek.

My strength is fading quickly now

Oh, no, I see a light shine down

Is it Heaven? Is it Angels?

But I hear some car keys jangle.

The light is but a spotlight

Shining down with all its might

To find the lost around me

Lying oh so very silent

Although I hear the workers

Running all around,

I look to my right to the mother who fell down.

Beyond her I see the college boy who said,

“See you on the other side because this is the end.”

Even though I thank those who saved me from my death,

For those who died before me, I regret not being dead.
