Salt River Flood

This is what Bullitt County Looked like in around March 7th 1997.
You could stand in our library and look in any direction and see water.
Luckily, the library's foundation is built up high enough to keep us dry, unless we have another "big one" like 1937!

This picture is taken standing on the library's loading dock looking toward the back side of the Courthouse. They had to evacuate the jail, as well as the emergency command post before the waters receded.

I waded through the water to get back into the library to make sure all was still dry. The water was cold. I am standing by the Courthouse Annex building, next to the library building. The top of the white foundation is the floor of the library. If the water gets that high we have wet carpet!
Walnut St. runs in front of the building (left side of picture).

This picture is taken from loading dock, looking towards the parking lot and railroad tracks. People walked down the railroad tracks as an escape route from the Salt River area of Shepherdsville. Rescue boats used the library parking lot to "launch" their rescue missions.

Here is the main road through town, Hwy 61 Buckman Street, looking South. The National guard was patrolling. The truck was unloading sand for sandbags.

I am standing in the library looking out of the window at 2nd Street -- The house you see is across the street from the library. Near the window on the library's "lawn" is a park bench. I started getting nervous when the top of that disappeared under the water.

Normally you can't even see the river from the library!

2nd Street runs under the railroad tracks. The underpass looked like somebody took Niagara Falls and tipped it sideways and ran it down 2nd street. The school on the other side of the underpass had water almost up to the second floor.
