Net Etiquette

  • Cover only one subject per message, which facilitates replies, forwarding, and filing.
  • Use mixed case, because MESSAGES IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS HAVE THE EFFECT OF SHOUTING!
  • Be diplomatic: criticism is always harsher when written, and electronic messages are easily forwarded.
  • Be calm: you may have mis-interpreted the inferred criticism or missed the ironic humor in a message; don't send a reply while you are still hot under the collar. (Networkers call this "flaming.")
