Summer Reading 2014

• Fun Giveaways

At each Summer Reading Program, participants can select from a variety of fun giveaways! Everyone is an instant winner just for participating!

• Big Prizes (Awarded at Finale)

Children's big prizes include a fractured fairy tales book set, an ant farm, a worm habitat, a Planet Frog live-frog habitat kit, a crystal-growing kit, a Larry's Lab Polymer Science Kit, a Test Tubes Discovery Lab, a buckyball, an EZ-View Birdhouse, a Fun Fly Stick Science Kit, a Dowling Mysteries Magnet Tube, a Solar Bullet Train, and a Super Solar Racecar Kit, and four $50 vouchers for Kart Kountry.

Big prizes for tweens and teens include a telescope, a rock tumbler, a Divergent Trilogy Box Set, a $35 Keystone Cinemas gift card, and a  $50 voucher for Kart Kountry.

• SPARKS Points

Teens and tweens can earn SPARKS points for extra chances to win big prizes at the finale. SPARKS are earned for each tween/teen summer reading program you attend, by completing special Online Investigations and reading challenges, and by visiting Imagination Stations in July.

Enjoy reading challenges, imagination stations, and special events!

• Reading Challenges: Began Tuesday, July 1st

Children pledge to read at least 30 minutes per week and record their progress in order to win prizes! Reading logs may be picked up at any BCPL location beginning June 22nd. Completed logs must be turned in no later than 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 31st.

To kick off the challenge, tweens & teens can pick up a free Fizz Boom Read bag during regular library hours from July 1st to July 7th. For the reading challenge, they must read 3 books and log their titles on the official Teen Summer Reading site at bcplteen.blogspot.com. Participants earn 3 SPARKS for each completed book, with a maximum of 9 points earned per participant. All titles must be logged online by 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 24th.

• Imagination Stations:
Began Saturday, July 5th

A new set of Imagination Stations will rotate to each library on a weekly basis. These are opportunities for participants to drop in to explore creative, hands-on activities at their own convenience. Tweens and teens may earn up to 9 SPARKS (3 per station) for each eligible Imagination Station they visit by 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 24th.

Children's Stations Include:

  • It's Alive! - Use microscopes to examine slides filled with plant and animal specimens, then complete a short worksheet and return it to the Circulation Desk for a prize.

  • Learn Library Science - Explore all the library has to offer while learning a little bit of what it takes to be a librarian. Complete our short library scavenger hunt and turn the results in at the Circulation Desk to win a prize.

  • Make It & Take It - Use our building supplies and follow simple plans to construct a bridge, a cabin, and more! And don't forget to check in at the Circulation Desk to get your own building kit to take home!

  • Marvelous Magnets - Learn about polarity and make a magnet float in midair! Complete a short worksheet and return it to the Circulation Desk for a prize.

Tween/Teen Stations Include:

  • Discarded Book Science Poetry - Challenge your vocabulary skills by cutting out words or phrases from discarded books to create a poem about a science-related topic.

  • Mathematical Puzzler - Train your brain on tricky number puzzles. How many can you solve?

  • Mystery Anatomy Art - Challenge your drawing skills by recreating one small portion of a larger unnamed anatomical drawing. Your contributions might be used to assemble and reveal the mystery anatomy image!

  • Origami Engineering - Test your paper-folding skills with a science-related origami project.

Summer Reading Finale

The Summer Reading wrap party will be at  Ridgway Memorial on Saturday, July 26th.
